What does my score mean?

A coronary artery calcium score is a measurement of the amount of calcium in the walls of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The amount of calcification –  your ‘calcium score’ – may help to predict the likelihood of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) in the coming years, and helps your doctor decide whether medication or other preventative measures could help lower your risk for heart attack.

Your calcium score helps estimate the amount of coronary artery disease on a scale:

• 0 = No evidence of coronary artery disease
• 1-10 = Minimal coronary artery disease
• 11-100 = Mild coronary artery disease
• 101-400 = Moderate coronary artery disease
  
• >400 = Extensive coronary artery disease

All patients receiving a coronary artery calcium screening study should discuss the results of the exam with their doctor since follow-up exams or treatment may be needed.
